HBU Extends The Contract Of Head Coach Vic Shealy

HBU Extends Vic Shealy’s Contract Huskies’ head football coach gets new deal through 2017-18.

The Houston Baptist Huskies football team will be in the hands of lead man Vic Shealy for another four years as the coach has agreed to an contract extension.

HOUSTON – HBU and head football coach Vic Shealy have agreed to a four-year contract extension through the 2017-18 academic year, Director of Athletics Steve Moniaci announced Tuesday.

“We have been greatly pleased with the startup of football under Coach Shealy and are very convinced that he is the man we want leading our program for years to come,” Moniaci said. “The type of young man that Coach Shealy and his staff have recruited are indicative of the type of young men we want to see at HBU.

The campus and athletic department administration cited Shealy’s ability to recruit not only outstanding talent, but student-athletes of character, in building the program. School officials feel the program is well ahead of where they thought it would be to this point.

“We are of course thrilled to have this extension of Coach Shealy’s contract,” HBU President Robert Sloan said. “We want him to be at HBU for a long time. He is an outstanding person and coach, and we can’t imagine having anyone better for our rapidly-developing program.”

Shealy has been at HBU since April 2012 and coached the Huskies through a developmental season last fall, during which they posted a 3-4 record. This year, HBU enters its first official season as a member of the Football Championship Series (FCS) and the Southland Conference.

“I am very grateful that the university has offered an opportunity for my family and I to stay part of the HBU family,” Shealy said. “We have adopted HBU as our school, we love Houston, we love the players and the staff we get to work with, so to be able to further commit to the university and have the university commit back to the Shealys is very humbling.”

Shealy spent four years as head coach at Azusa Pacific from 1995-98, winning the NAIA national championship in his final season. He has been an assistant at Kansas, Richmond, UNLV, Air Force, Austin Peay and Mars Hills. Shealy played at Richmond and earned his bachelor’s degree in 1984, before becoming a graduate assistant coach and earning his Master’s degree at Baylor in 1986.

“One of the comforting aspects of this extension is being able to walk into a prospective student-athlete’s home and be able to sit there and tell them ‘I’m going to be your football coach,” Shealy said. “The university has made a commitment for four years to allow me to say that with confidence. Also, for the players that are already in our program, when they took on the vision and the hope we gave them of building a program at HBU, we want them to know that what they signed on for, their coaches are going to be there with them for their entire college careers.”

HBU kicks off the 2014 season in its inaugural game on campus when it hosts McMurry Saturday at 7 p.m. at Husky Stadium.

YesIBall Catches Up With Houston Cougars Baller Trevon Stewart

YesIBall had the opppurtunity to catch up with Junior Safety Trevon Stewart of the Houston Cougars football team about their first practice. Stewart is a valuable player for the Coogs as he’s returning from a season where he had six fumble recoveries and four Interceptions.

YesIBall: Dee Van here with Trevon Stewart, U of H DB. What’s up man? How’s everything going?

Trevon Stewart: Good man, great first day of practice.

YIB: I wanted to ask you about that. How would you rate this year’s first practice to last year’s? I noticed that everything looked smoother and yall looked more loose out there.

TS: It was smooth. You know we’ve got that chemistry now. We’ve been together for a year already and everybody’s back, the coaches are back, so we feel good about each other. We’ve all became closer and we had a great first day.

YIB: So you guys now have a few more teams to the conference this year. Is there a certain game that you have circled on the calendar?

TS: You know, we’re ready for all of them. We say that all of them are key games, but we’re ready to start our first game in the new stadium. We’re ready to pop that off that night against UTSA.

YIB: Speaking of the new stadium, how are you guys feeling about it?

TS: It’s great. Man, we went in there the other day and it’s nice. It’s top knotch.

YIB: Yeah, I’m looking forward to seeing it too. Have a good season and good luck with everything.

TS: Thanks, I appreciate it.

Reggie Wayne Shows He’s Still A Beast With Circus TD Catch

Reggie Wayne had one of the best touchdown catches that we may see all season. Giants cornerback Aaron Ross tried to pick off a pass, but it bounced off of him and into the hands of Reggie Wayne for a TD. It’s only preseason, but this play is awesome regardless.
