Texas Southern Lands Former 4 Star Football Recruit Transfer From Miami Hurrcanes

Just last year, 4 star recruit Derrick Griffin had universities such as Texas A&M, Auburn and Miami all fighting to get his signature on the dotted line. While the Hurricanes won that fight, today Texas Southern won the battle. The Rosenberg Terry High School standout receiver has reportedly enrolled in class at TSU and is planning to play the 2015 season, which means Homer Causey will have a brand new 6’7 target on his team.

Mark Berman of Fox 26 Houston reported that the change was made because of academic ineligibility but also says Griffin was able to enroll because of TSU’s summer-bridge program-

“Our summer-bridge program is set up to take incoming freshman that need additional help to become college ready,” athletic director Dr. Charles McClelland told the station. “Derek successfully participated in that program which is why he is now a full-time student at Texas Southern University.”

Griffin won’t be able to suit up for the Tigers this season, but be sure that it will be a treat for TSU fans to see him in the Maroon and white.

The Houston Baptist Huskies will be taking their talents to Bowling Green, KY to face the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky. The teams have agreed to open the 2016 season against each other, says Houston Baptist in a release.

HOUSTON – HBU has announced that its first-ever football game against a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) institution will take place in the 2016 season opener, when the Huskies face Western Kentucky, HBU Director of Athletics Steve Moniaci released Thursday.

The game between the Huskies and the Hilltoppers will be held Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016, at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium in Bowling Green, Ky.

“We are very pleased to announce our 2016 football season opener will be at Western Kentucky,” Moniaci said. “This will be our program’s first game against an FBS opponent and should be an exciting trip for our student-athletes, as well as an important step in their growth as a team.”

Western Kentucky is entering its first season as a member of Conference USA in 2014, after going 8-4 overall and 4-3 in its final season in the Sun Belt Conference last year.

The Huskies will also go to battle against the Tigers of Texas Southern in the same season.

HBU has a non-conference home game against Northern Colorado scheduled for 2015, leaving two openings, then the Western Kentucky game and a home game against Texas Southern in 2016, leaving one non-conference opening.

Football Is In The Air- Houston Coogs First Day Of Practice

The fresh smell of football was floating through the city of Houston on Saturday August 2 as the UH Cougars took to the practice field for the first time in the 2014 season.

The Cougars, who are picked to finish third in the American Conference preseason polls, will have a lot of key players back in the fold from their team that went 8-5 last season. As a matter of fact, the Coogs will have all but two significant players returning to their defense.

One of the things that stood out the most about the Cougars today in their first practice was that they look smoother and more crisp than they did at the beginning of last season. YesIball caught up with the ball hawking Safety Trevon Stewart, who had six fumble recoveries and four Interceptions last season, to discuss their first practice “It was smooth. You know we’ve got that chemistry now. We’ve been together for a year already and everybody’s back, the coaches are back, so we feel good about each other. We’ve all became closer and we had a great first day.”

They definitely look comfortable. Even though it was only the first day, you can see some type of swag stemming from every player that was rocking the red helmet on the field.

The Cougars are set to open the season in their brand new home, TDECU stadium, where they are set to hosts UTSA in a nationally televised game.

Houston Baptist Football Team Holds First Scrimmage

Houston Baptist Football Team Has First Scrimmage

The bright lights glaring over the newly laid Dunham Field, a parking lot full of cars while helmets and shoulder pads slam against each other.

After 51 years of not having a football team, the Houston Baptist Huskies hit the field and held their first scrimmage.

On August 31st, HBU will be starting their inaugural season vs. the Sam Houston State Bearcats and I’m sure, no matter what the outcome of the game or any games this season, the fans will feel victorious just by having a team.

The Huskies are in the process of starting something special and you could just feel it in the atmosphere of the team’s scrimmage. As the Huskies ran plays, you could hear the oohs and aahs from a crowd of enthusiastic fans and Alumni who have been deprived of watching their school play football.

While at the scrimmage, a guy was overheard telling his kid while smiling, “We have football now son, we finally have football”.

The fans are excited and the team is excited, so that means we can all be ready for an exciting first season from the Houston Baptist University Huskies. Be on the look out for this team, be patient and enjoy the ride.
